On December 23, 2024, Evelyne Mukasonga was appointed as the Ambassador for Rwanda at the Nation Voice Foundation.
We are honored to welcome Evelyne to our team as she joins us in advancing our mission of raising awareness about poverty, agriculture, work opportunities, and education gaps while working to foster hope and opportunity for underserved communities. As Ambassador for Rwanda, Evelyne will play a vital role in spreading awareness, supporting our initiatives, and representing the Nation Voice Foundation’s values on a global platform.
Evelyne Mukasonga, born in Rwanda in 1969, endured unimaginable hardship during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, losing many loved ones in the tragedy. Forced to flee to Zaire, she met her future husband amid the turmoil. However, their safety was short-lived as conflict erupted between Zaire and Rwanda. Evelyne’s husband, an officer in the Congolese army, was faced with an ultimatum to abandon or eliminate his Rwandan wife. In a courageous act of love and defiance, he chose to renounce his military allegiance and joined a rebel faction to protect her.
Evelyne’s trials did not end there. She was later detained as an enemy combatant and endured months of imprisonment with her infant son. Through the intervention of the United Nations, Evelyne and her husband were reunited and eventually relocated to the United States in 2000. Since then, Evelyne has dedicated her life to supporting refugees and advocating for the voiceless, embodying the values of resilience, solidarity, and compassion.
Her experiences and commitment to humanitarian causes align deeply with the mission of the Nation Voice Foundation. Evelyne Mukasonga’s leadership and story inspire hope and serve as a beacon of strength for individuals and communities affected by conflict and hardship.
